NCEA level 1 courses: information for schools
As a result of NZQA’s review of NCEA level 1, 150-level courses in maths, English and science will be discontinued from 2012, and only students with an identified need will be able to enroll in these courses in 2011.
Once students achieve 14 credits at this level it is expected they will be moved on to courses at level 6 of the curriculum, following discussion between their Te Kura teacher and dual school coordinator.
250-level courses will be offered in 2011 but will be discontinued from 2012 onwards.
As new achievement standards are being developed for 2011, students enrolled in NCEA level 1 courses must sit exams for their external achievement standards this year, although if necessary they can continue internal standards to complete their course in 2011.
Te Kura is revising all NCEA level 1 courses to align with the standards review, so courses offered in 2011 will be different from those available this year. This is a significant body of work for Te Kura. Our aim is to ensure materials for each course are available at the start of term 1, 2011, with a minimum of 18 credits available over the year.
If you have any questions about the standards review and implications for Te Kura students, please contact your relationship coordinator in the first instance.
