The first thing you need to do when enrolling at Te Kura is select which type of ākonga (student) you are. If you get stuck, you can read about the enrolment types below or contact us to discuss your options.

We aim to process enrolment applications within 10 to 15 working days, but this may vary depending on the time of year.

If you’re applying for an online course, you will receive an email with login instructions as soon as your enrolment has been approved.

Enrolment types

An early childhood student is:

  • aged between 2–6 years old
  • a New Zealand citizen, permanent resident or a domestic student
  • meets one of the eligibility criteria set out by the Ministry of Education. 

A full-time student is:

  • aged between 5–19 years old (but not turning 20 during the year of enrolment)
  • residing in New Zealand
  • a New Zealand citizen, permanent resident or domestic student
  • meets one of the eligibility criteria for full-time study set out by the Ministry of Education.

If you are not eligible under the Ministry of Education’s criteria for a funded place at Te Kura, you may be able to enrol as a fee-paying student.

The exact fees depend on your citizenship status, place of residence and level of study. Enrolments are for that calendar year only.

An overseas student is:

  • aged between 5–19 years old (but not turning 20 during the year of enrolment)
  • a New Zealand citizen or a permanent resident (having resided in New Zealand for two consecutive years or more)
  • meets one of the full-time overseas eligibility criteria as set out by the Ministry of Education.

A young adult student is:

  • aged 16–19 years old
  • residing in New Zealand
  • New Zealand citizen, permanent resident or verified domestic student
  • not attending a school full-time.

Students enrolled as young adults may remain enrolled up to and including the end of the school year in which the student turns 19 years old. Click here to enrol as a young adult.

If you turn 20 years old during the enrolment year you must apply as an adult student.

An adult student is:

  • aged 20 years old or older during the year of enrolment 
  • residing in New Zealand
  • New Zealand citizen, permanent resident or verified domestic student
  • not attending a secondary school full time.

You will pay an administration tuition fee of $116 per course. Enrolments are for that calendar year only.
