The facility to register for external standards is now closed for 2025 and will re-open from early June 2026.
If you still need to register for 2025, please urgently call our Qualifications Advisor on 0800 659 988 option 3 and ask for Jo.
If Te Kura is your only secondary school in 2026, our Qualifications team will email instructions from early June advising what you need to do and by when if you wish to register for external standards.
If you are studying at a secondary school as well as Te Kura in 2026, your main school will be responsible for registering you for any externally assessed standards in your Te Kura subjects.
Portfolio, Report and Kete Manarua submissions can only be assessed if the appropriate externally assessed standards are selected in your NCEA registration submission.
If you are not sure if you should register, or which externally assessed standards to choose, please ask your kaimanaaki or subject kaiako (teacher). Results from internally assessed standards are automatically reported to NZQA during the year.
If you are enrolled with a secondary school as well as Te Kura, your own school should register you for any externally assessed standards for your Te Kura subjects.
BEFORE you start your NCEA registration, please carefully all read the information below.
Complete your NCEA registration form before the deadline specified on the NCEA registration instructions we emailed to you (or to your supervisor).
If you register for end of year exams, you’ll also need to ask a local secondary school if you can sit your exams there. Te Kura requires approval from your nominated exam centre school by the same deadline (see Exam Centre School below).
4 July is the final date you can register for the TAPā standard. 25 July is the final date you can register for the DCAT standard/s. You can only submit one registration form so if you want to include any other externally assessed standards , make sure to include them if you wish to register for TAPā and/or DCAT.
If you were previously enrolled with another secondary school this year, you will need to re-register for any externally assessed standards through the NCEA Registration form.
You can only submit one registration form so it must include all external standards you wish to register for. If you need to make a change to your submitted registration, please contact our Qualifications team.
Te Kura is not an end of year exam centre school. If you register for end of year exams, you will need to ask a local secondary school if you can sit there. You select a school on the NCEA registration form.
NCEA practice exams are sat at home from 25 to 29 August 2025.
You must take photo ID to each of your exam sessions. This can be a student ID card, driver’s licence, passport etc. If you don’t currently have photo ID, please order a student ID card now through our website.
Digital exams are typed on a device (with a physically attached keyboard) rather than being hand-written in paper booklets.
Important dates can be found here.
