Learning Japanese gives ākonga the chance to communicate in a different language, and to gain an appreciation of a fascinating culture. Ākonga develop their speaking and listening skills, as well as reading and using the unique kanji writing system, which can be a rewarding and enjoyable experience. Ākonga will find knowledge of Japanese very helpful if they are planning on travelling to Japan or hosting Japanese visitors.
Japanese is the study of the language and the culture. Ākonga will develop their listening and reading skills in order to communicate in both spoken and written Japanese to express information, ideas and opinions related to everyday familiar contexts. This course builds on the skills acquired in Beginners Japanese (JP000) or an equivalent course. It is a requirement that ākonga are able to read and write the hiragana script before starting JPN1000.
