Summer School enrolments are open
NCEA exams may not officially end until Monday, but secondary students are already checking out Summer School at Te Kura.
Enrolments opened this week. It’s the fifth year Te Kura has offered summer study, with more than 1500 students taking advantage of Summer School last year to top up their NCEA credits to ensure they achieved the qualification they needed for further study, training or to secure a job.
Numbers have leapt every year.
Schools benefit from Summer School as well because credits achieved by a student at Summer School and by the NZQA deadline – usually mid-February - are loaded on to the student’s previous school of enrolment.
There are more than 30 subjects at Te Kura Summer School available, with all learning done online. That means student can study anywhere, and at any time, just as long as they have access to a computer and connectivity.
Te Kura CE Mike Hollings says students who enrol at Summer School must work hard, but Te Kura teachers are available to help.
“There is definitely a different feeling with Summer School. Our teachers make the point that there is a sense of urgency about it, with students acutely aware of the consequences of not getting their qualifications.”
One student, Thomas Nell, who enrolled last year, says it was quite different studying at Summer School, than at his face-to-face school.
“At Summer School you need to be proactive about wanting to get stuff done. It was a more grown up vibe…you have to be resilient and crack on with the work.”
Mr Hollings says many students have already enrolled.
“We also get another rush in January when NCEA results come in, and students start to realise they are just short of the credits they need to get over the line.”
