Certificate in Teacher Aiding
Te Kura has a partnership with the Open Polytechnic, that enables supervisors of full-time and early childhood students to study towards a Certificate in Teacher Aiding for a significantly reduced fee.
The programme offers you the opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of how to support your student’s learning. It is a Level 4, NZQA-accredited 40 credit programme.
For supervisors of Year 1–8
Your work as a Te Kura supervisor of students in Years 1–8 meets the practical requirements for the programme, although we suggest that you attend our event days in your area while you are studying. We also recommend you spend some time at a primary or intermediate school where you can observe and interact with groups of children.
For supervisors of Year 9 Students and above
If you are supervising students in Year 9 or above, you will need to complete the programme’s practical requirements through a primary or intermediate school.

I’m pleased that I didn’t find studying the Teacher Aide course a daunting task and setting aside up to an hour a day was enough to have the assignments in on time. Immediately I was able to implement some of the course content learned which really helped my teaching methods and session plans. This course has been extremely helpful in providing links to useful resources for the various learning areas and additional mentors for ongoing support. My children are thrilled that their dad has a qualification in the teaching field!
‘It had been many years since I had studied so it was a challenge to get back into that study routine, but as I completed each assignment and received feedback from my tutor and Te Kura’s supervisor support advisor, I gained the confidence to continue. This certificate has been beneficial in the day-to-day supervising of my son and the challenges he faces as a student, and has since given me the qualification and pleasure of supporting other supervisors and students. It also opened the door to a journey of further study for me as an adult student with Te Kura. I studied Digital Technology and this gave me the confidence to be editor of the supervisor newsletter. I have delved into other free online learning sites to upskill other core subjects. I would encourage other supervisors to pursue the teacher aide qualification as it has many benefits and there are Te Kura staff and study buddies who are willing to help you every step of the way.’
