The principles that guide us

Ngā Mātāpono are the five principles visible in learning design at Te Kura. These principles are drawn from te ao Māori, while also reflecting the philosophy of Big Picture Learning.

  • Māramatonutanga, Whakawhanaungatanga and Whaitake are aligned to the ‘three R’s of Big Picture Learning’ - Relevance, Relationships and Rigour.
  • Kotahitanga acknowledges the significance in the New Zealand education environment of wellbeing and the holistic development of each learner within the context of whānau and community.
  • Whakamana places the learner and their whānau at the centre of our practice, recognising the importance of learner agency within the process of ako (reciprocal learning).
