What is Earth and Space Science?

Earth and Space Science is the study of our planet, its processes, and its place in the universe. Ākonga explore how Earth systems - geology, oceans, atmosphere, and climate - interact with each other and with life. They also investigate the wider cosmos, including stars, planets, galaxies, and the origins of the universe. Through this study, ākonga develop scientific knowledge and skills to explain natural phenomena, understand environmental change, and interpret evidence from Earth and beyond. They also learn to evaluate the impacts of science on society, technology, and the environment. Earth and Space Science supports pathways into a wide range of fields, including environmental science, geology, climate studies, astronomy, marine science, resource management and education.
