What is History?

To understand the past is to understand the present. History gives ākonga an insight into the current world and New Zealand’s identity and place within it. It explores people and events and how they have influenced the present. Ākonga improve their communication and writing skills, enabling them to express clear, convincing and well-thought-out arguments. History is both a fascinating and intellectually stimulating subject.

What this course involves

History provides an opportunity for ākonga to gain knowledge and understanding of key historical events, places and people. Ākonga will learn how historical narratives shape and influence their understanding of themselves and the world around them. In History, ākonga learn key concepts central to the discipline such as cause, effect, significance and evidence. They also learn to look at the past and its relationship to the present using Māori and Pasifika concepts. These include whakapapa, mana, tūrangawaewae, vā and fonua, providing ākonga with an even richer knowledge and understanding of the past and its connection to the present.
