To understand the past is to understand the present. History gives ākonga an insight into the current world and New Zealand’s identity and place within it. It explores people and events and how they have influenced the present. Ākonga improve their communication and writing skills, enabling them to express clear, convincing and well-thought-out arguments. History is both a fascinating and intellectually stimulating subject.
In History ākonga learn about people, places, cultures and events which have influenced the world we live in today. Ākonga study:
- A contested historical event from Aotearoa New Zealand
- A significant historical event of their choice.
Ākonga also have an opportunity to prepare for an external assessment by specialising further in one of these two topics:
- New Zealand in the 19th Century OR
- Tudor and Stuart England from 1558-1660
New Zealand Scholarship exams are designed to extend very high achieving Level 3 ākonga. Those who wish to enter the New Zealand Scholarship exam in this subject must discuss this option with their Te Kura subject kaiako.
