NCEA registration

At Te Kura you can study NCEA Levels 1, 2 and 3. Your kaiako and kaimanaaki help you plan your learning and assessments, so you know what to do and when. Before you can attempt any externally assessed standards and be awarded credits, you will need to register for NCEA with Te Kura before the deadline each school year.

Results from internally assessed standards are automatically reported to NZQA during the year.

    The registration process

Ākonga studying NCEA at Te Kura need to register for any externally assessed standards.

    These include:

    • NCEA and NZ Scholarship end of year exams, sat at an Exam Centre School
    • TAPā for Level 1 Te Ao Haka (1.3) sat at a Te Kura venue
    • DCAT for Level 2/3 Digital Technologies (2.10, 3.10) sat at a Te Kura venue
    • Portfolio, Report, Kete Manarua submissions for:
      - Level 1 – Dance, Digital Technologies, Music, Physical Education, Te Ao Haka, Te Reo Māori
      - All levels – Design and Visual Communication, Technology, Visual Arts
      - NZ Scholarship – Health and Physical Education, Music

Te Kura doesn't register ākonga automatically – you must submit an online NCEA registration to tell us:

    • which external standards you want to sit
    • where you plan to sit your end-of-year exams (your chosen Exam Centre School).

After you submit your registration, we'll email you instructions on how to arrange approval from your chosen Exam Centre School. They must confirm via our online portal before your registration can be finalised.

Te Kura is not an Exam Centre School – you'll need to find a local secondary school.

We'll also let you know whether your exams are in digital or paper format. Your chosen Exam Centre School will decide which format they will offer for each exam – Te Kura has no influence on this decision.

Once you have received a confirmation email of your NCEA registration, it is important that you check the standards you have selected and let us know about any changes well ahead of the deadline.

You can only submit one registration form, so it must include all external standards you wish to register for. Portfolio, Report and Kete Manarua submissions can only be assessed if the appropriate externally assessed standards are selected in your NCEA registration submission.

If you need to make a change to your submitted registration, please contact our Qualifications team as soon as possible.

For more information about NCEA, check out the NZQA and the Ministry of Education websites.

    Need help with NCEA administration?

We have a dedicated team to help you navigate the administration side of NCEA. If you are not sure if you should register, or which externally assessed standards to choose, please ask your kaimanaaki or subject kaiako first.

If you are enrolled with another secondary school as well as Te Kura, your main school will register you for any externally assessed standards for your Te Kura subjects. Please contact the Principal's Nominee at your main school.

If you were previously enrolled with another secondary school then moved to Te Kura this year, you will need to re-register through us for any externally assessed standards.
