Meet the team
At Te Kura you have a whole support team to guide you:
This is your main go-to person. They help you set up your PLP, check in on your progress, and support your wellbeing. They can also provide support with engagement, goal setting, and setting up a study timetable.
These are key people in your life who help you with your learning at home.
These are subject experts who guide you with your coursework and assessments, and provide feedback on your mahi.
These are support kaimahi who encourage, motivate, and help you join in a range of activities and events, including He Whai Taumaru or Kiwisport opportunities.
Your first stop for general help with logins, My Te Kura, Microsoft 365, or Te Kura laptops.
You can connect with your support team by email, text or phone, and you can meet up during face-to-face or online Huinga Ako. We encourage whānau and supervisors to stay in touch too.

Support and resources for ākonga
Helping you start strong.
Your support team is here to guide you every step of the way. Make sure you keep in touch!
Contact your kaimanaaki or kaiako if you need help with any of your mahi, if you want to add or change a subject, or if you want to celebrate an achievement.
Always update your kaimanaaki or our Student and Whānau Support team if your address, phone number, or email changes, so we can keep your contact information up to date. We'll also need to know if your supervisor changes.
Wellbeing matters
- Kaimanaaki and kaiāwhina are here to check in on your wellbeing and provide pastoral care.
- You can explore Te Ara Whakapuāwai – the pathway to flourishing, an online course in My Te Kura about identity, diversity, connection, and leadership.
- Your kaimanaaki may suggest external services or resources if they think you would benefit from that help.
- Te Kura offers confidential online counselling for full-time and young adult ākonga. To access this support, please speak with your kaimanaaki and they will arrange a referral on your behalf.
- There are free support helplines outside of Te Kura that are available to all young people in Aotearoa New Zealand. These services can be a great option if you need to talk to someone right away or outside of school hours.
- Youthline 24/7 support for any issue, big or small. Free call 0800 376 633 or free text 234.
- What's Up? Free counselling and advice for children and young people. Free call 0800 942 8787 Monday-Sunday 11am-11pm, or chat online Monday-Sunday 11am-10:30pm.
- Youth Law is a free community law centre for children and young people. This is a good starting point for looking into your rights and the law.
- Free health services for whānau in Aotearoa New Zealand include immunisations and dental care up to age 18, hearing checks, and subsidies for glasses or eye exams. Please reach out to your local GP or health practitioner, or visit Te Whatu Ora | Health New Zealand if you would like to know more.
- Te Kura gives out free period products to ākonga who would like them. They are usually available at Huinga Ako or at our local tari.
More community services and wellbeing resources can be found in My Te Kura, our online learning platform.
Getting set up for online learning
To get set up online, you'll need:
- a suitable device (laptop, desktop, notebook or tablet that has a hard disk drive of more than 80GB and memory of more than 4GB)
- internet access – we recommend broadband with a data plan (at least 30GB per month)
- Microsoft 365 and Adobe Reader software to create, edit and view different types of documents on your device
- a webcam, microphone and headphones for your online classes
- optional extras, like a printer or scanner.
You will receive detailed guidance on getting set up online when you enrol with us.
If you don't have a laptop, or if you need financial assistance for an internet connection, you might be able to get help from Te Kura. Your whānau will need to have a Community Services Card and/or receive a government benefit to be eligible for our laptop and connectivity assistance programme.
Our Te Kura library supports ākonga, supervisors, and whānau with resources for learning and enjoyment at home. You can join the library by filling out a short online form located on the library homepage. Once signed up, you can borrow print books and magazines from our physical library, or access eBooks and eAudiobooks in our eLibrary.
Te Kura provides student ID cards for full-time, young adult, and adult ākonga. In some regions, your card can give you access to discounts on public transport and for community activities.
Your card can also be used as photo ID for NCEA exams.
Learning Support is for ākonga who need extra help to achieve their goals.
Our regional Team Leaders Learning Support will work with you, your whānau, and your kaimanaaki to get the right support.
If you have a physical, medical, sensory, learning, or psychological challenge, you may be able to get help with your NCEA assessments. This is known as SAC.
Commonly approved SAC options include a reader/writer, computer use, extra time, or a separate room. Talk to your kaimanaaki about how to apply.
Support and resources for supervisors and whānau
Learning together.
All supervisors are set up with a login for My Te Kura, our online learning platform.
This login lets supervisors view:
- courses and content – including a special induction course
- completed learning for their ākonga, including work uploaded to dropboxes and feedback from kaiako
- login history for their ākonga.
If you are a registered supervisor of a full-time ākonga at Te Kura, you may be eligible for an ākonga support payment twice a year from the Ministry of Education.
Te Kura offers free Te Reo Māori and Kaupapa Māori courses – there are no fees for many ākonga, including young adult and adult learners.
- Literacy Aotearoa programmes in reading, writing, and IT
- Resources such as online dictionaries, Māori Language Commission guides and other online tools – ask your support team for suggestions
- Netsafe provides online safety information and resources for your whānau
- Local Huinga Ako and regional school events for ākonga and whānau.
