Learning happens everywhere
For many ākonga at senior secondary level, He Whai Taumaru is a big part of your programme. You'll spend time in the community, gaining experience and confidence while potentially earning NCEA credits. This might include volunteering, cultural and sporting activities, or shadowing mentors in areas you're passionate about.
You could also get the chance to:
- complete internships and join community groups
- explore your interests through hands-on, real-life experiences
- build skills that connect to future training, study, or jobs
Your kaimanaaki will help you identify suitable work placement opportunities in your community that match your interests.
Your support team will also help you coordinate He Whai Taumaru opportunities as part of your PLP, so your learning stays connected to your goals.
Recognition of your mahi will be part of your plan, and may include achieving NCEA credits.

Student Volunteer Army Service Award scheme
The Student Volunteer Army (SVA) is a movement committed to volunteering. This organisation believes in the power of volunteers and has created a program to recognise student volunteers across Aotearoa New Zealand. Te Kura has registered with SVA to celebrate ākonga success and contributions to the community.
Volunteering is doing something to help others in your community, such as caring for members of your own whānau, helping out at sports events, helping out at animal shelters such as the SPCA, picking up rubbish at the local beach or waterway – something that you are not getting paid for.
How does SVA work?
Register your profile on the SVA website.
Log every piece of volunteering you do while you are studying with Te Kura. The website keeps a record, and rewards you for your hours along the way with some very cool service pins.
Volunteering can be done anywhere, anytime – home, school and community service will all be counted together. You get your first pin after five hours of service. SVA will notify Te Kura and we will award it to you.
You can download your summary of volunteer work anytime and use it for job applications, apprenticeships, further education, scholarships, or to display on your wall at home!
Congratulations if you are undertaking or considering any volunteer work.
If you have any questions, please contact your kaimanaaki.
